I had wanted to try these for ages, but kept postponing it. Today I finally made them: how delicious! My husband is emptying the tin. Spiced and crisp, with rather rushed decoration as I had little time; it certainly needs improvement. Some make icing with icing sugar and egg white. I used icing sugar, a little water, lemon drops and sprinkles. Add food colouring for different colours if you like.

- Step 1 of 15
I beat the soft butter and both sugars in a stand mixer or with electric whisks.

- Step 2 of 15
I add the spices.

- Step 3 of 15
I beat the egg with a tablespoon of milk in a bowl using a fork, add to the whipped mixture and beat for a few more minutes.

- Step 4 of 15
When fluffy, I scrape down the sides well.

- Step 5 of 15
I add the sifted flour and teaspoon of baking powder and beat briefly, just until combined.

- Step 6 of 15
I remove the dough and bring it together on a lightly floured worktop.

- Step 7 of 15
I form a dry, non-sticky block, wrap in cling film and rest for at least 1 hour.

- Step 8 of 15
After resting, I roll to 4 mm thick.

- Step 9 of 15
Now have fun with your favourite cutters.

- Step 10 of 15
I arrange on trays lined with baking paper.

- Step 11 of 15
I bake at 170°C for 15/18 minutes. Ovens vary; do not let them darken too much. Let them cool before removing from the tray; they will have firmed up.

- Step 12 of 15
Now decorate. I mix a few tablespoons of icing sugar with lemon drops and very little water into thick icing. Add water a teaspoon at a time; if too runny, add more sugar.

- Step 13 of 15
I put it in a baking-paper cone.

- Step 14 of 15
I decorate; you will surely do better, but I was in a great hurry.

- Step 15 of 15
I keep them in a tin.
